Common questions
Are the prices in the catalogue real market rates?
No. The times and prices that come with the catalogue are invented starting points, marked “example” wherever they appear. The app ships with no material prices at all; the sample materials you can load on request are marked “sample” and their prices are invented too. Replace them with your own under Prices.
Which VAT rate should I put on a quote?
The app cannot tell you. For each quote you choose “Not VAT registered” or “VAT registered” with the 20%, 5% or 0% preset, or a rate you type in. The right rate depends on the work and the property. Check with HMRC or your accountant.
Is markup the same as margin?
No. Markup is a percentage added to cost; margin is the share of the selling price that the markup makes up. The app always asks for a markup and shows the resulting margin separately. In the built-in example, a 17.5% markup on £95.18 of materials adds £16.66, which is a margin of 14.9%.
Can the client see what I paid for materials?
No. The PDF lists descriptions, quantities and the price of each line to the client. Where a markup applies it is included in those prices, spread over the lines in whole pence so that they add up to the printed total. Purchase prices, the markup and your profit are never printed, in the itemised version or in the summary.
Is the PDF an invoice?
No. It is a quotation and says so on the page. The payment terms, exclusions and other terms on it are your own text; the wording the app starts with is a neutral example, not legal advice, and the document is not a contract template.
Does the app tell me how to design, test or certify the work?
No. It adds up prices and prints quotations. It gives no wiring, design, testing or certification guidance and checks compliance with nothing. You remain responsible for how the work is designed, carried out and certified.
How do I back up my data or move it to a new phone?
In this version you cannot. There is no backup, no import and no account, and the data is left out of Android’s automatic backup. If you lose the phone, uninstall the app or clear its data, everything in it is gone. Keep the PDFs you send, and export your price list and cost sheets as CSV files if you want a copy of the figures.
How do I delete everything?
Jobs, clients, materials and quotes can each be deleted in the app. More → Your data → Erase everything removes all of it from the phone after a confirmation; it cannot be undone. Uninstalling the app does the same. Files you have already shared are not affected.
Why does the app not ask for any permission?
It does not need one. Clients are typed in by hand rather than read from your contacts, travel is entered as miles rather than taken from your location, and PDFs and CSV files are passed to the Android share sheet or the print service, where you choose the destination.
In the app itself, More → “How prices are worked out” shows the order of the sums with a worked example, and More → “Your data” shows what is stored on the phone. See also the privacy policy and the changelog.
